About the Alliance

The Earthquake Country Alliance is a public-private partnership of leading earthquake professionals, emergency managers, government officials, business and community leaders, and others, led by Dr. Lucy Jones (United States Geological Survey), Ellis Stanley (City of Los Angeles Emergency Preparedness Department) and Prof. Tom Jordan (Southern California Earthquake Center, USC).

Some of our many partners include the Southern California Association of Governments, the County of Los Angeles, California Geological Survey, Caltech, UCLA, FEMA, California Office of Emergency Services, California Earthquake Authority, and the American Red Cross.

Mission
The Earthquake Country Alliance unites leaders in government, disaster response, science, business, media, education and local communities to:

  • inspire responsibility for community earthquake safety and recovery;
  • increase awareness, preparedness, mitigation;
  • improve response and recovery planning;
  • reduce losses in future earthquakes.

Five-Year Vision
By 2012, Southern California exemplifies how people, governments, schools, and businesses working together have dramatically reduced the potential for losses in earthquakes.

Goals by 2009

  • Significant improvements in personal, business, and community earthquake safety will be initiated.
  • A comprehensive earthquake scenario for the Southernmost San Andreas fault will be completed, including state-of-the-art science, engineering, and risk analysis methodologies. This will be the basis of the largest-ever coordinated earthquake response exercise involving government, business, schools, and the general public -- the Great Southern California ShakeOut.
  • The Earthquake Country Alliance will be further developed with effective organizational structures and expanded participation at all leadership levels.

Summary of Major Projects for 2007
  1. Dare to Prepare (2007 Earthquake Readiness Campaign)
  2. Policy summits (early 2007 and early 2008)
