ALERT!

CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS MUST ACT NOW
TO PREPARE FOR THE NEXT BIG EARTHQUAKE

Dare to Prepare Campaign Promotes Earthquake Preparedness with
Free "Putting Down Roots in Earthquake County" Guide

WHAT?: California residents are urged to learn about Southern California's earthquake risks and become familiar with the seven steps to earthquake safety before the next big California earthquake hits.

Free earthquake preparedness guides are available for the public to download at www.daretoprepare.org, an d in Spanish at www.terremotos.org. The free guide was developed by experts at the Southern California Earthquake Center, U.S. Geological Survey, American Red Cross, the California Earthquake Authority, and many other organizations. Copies will also be available on May 4 as an insert in the Los Angeles edition of HOY newspaper, on May 5 in FIN DE SEMANA, and at the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles.

The preparedness guides are part of the Dare to Prepare campaign (www.daretoprepare.org), a year-long effort to raise earthquake awareness and encourage earthquake preparedness in California by providing practical information for families on how to reduce the risk of home, school, and business damage and injury during earthquakes.

To help promote the availability of the free "Putting Down Your Roots in Earthquake Country" guide in Spanish, the campaign is being supported by media announcements on Univision Radio's popular Los Angeles stations KLVE and KSCA, on Univision's flagship TV station KMEX-TV, and on sister station KFTR-TV. The TV and radio ads feature Univision's on-air personalities Carlos Alvarez and Marcela Luévanos, and will air through the first week of May. Additionally, banners will be featured on Univision's Los Angeles website.
WHEN?: Now! California residents are encouraged to secure their free earthquake guide now, before the next big California earthquake hits.
WHY?: This year is the 150th anniversary of the last great San Andreas earthquake in Southern California, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake that shook the entire region. Prominent scientists are nervous about the potential for another great earthquake on the San Andreas fault. When an earthquake strikes, the main cause of injury or death is unsecured heavy objects toppling over. Therefore, being prepared is the best defense against earthquakes.
